The game development studio Comcept, founded by former Mega Man producer Keiji Inafune, has officially been dissolved. The closure marks the end of a company whose name became inextricably linked to one of gaming's most notable crowdfunding disappointments.
Comcept was launched with significant fanfare in 2010, capitalizing on Inafune's legacy with the beloved Mega Man franchise. The studio's most prominent project was Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to Mega Man funded via a massively successful 2013 Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $4 million. However, the project was plagued by delays, communication issues, and ultimately, a critically panned launch in 2016. The game's failure to meet lofty expectations became a cautionary tale within the crowdfunding scene.
While the studio attempted to move forward with other projects, including Red Ash and ReCore, the shadow of Mighty No. 9 proved long. The dissolution of Comcept formally concludes a turbulent chapter for the developer, whose ambitious beginnings ultimately gave way to a legacy defined by a single, high-profile setback. The intellectual property rights for the studio's creations are expected to be transferred to its parent company.
