More Than Just a Game

More Than Just a Game

The old sound of Wii remotes clicking and family members laughing used to fill my living room almost every weekend. My cousins and I would crowd around the TV playing Wii Sports bowling and tennis for hours, arguing over scores while the bright music echoed through the house. Years later, hearing the familiar startup chime of a Wii console feels less like a game and more like a time machine.

I found an old console in my parents' basement last week. The plastic casing was yellowed, and the sensor bar was tangled in a knot of cords. I plugged it in anyway. When the screen lit up with those floating white blocks, I felt a strange tightness in my chest. I scrolled through the Mii channel and saw digital versions of people I had not spoken to in years. My uncle's Mii had a terrible haircut. My cousin's Mii was too tall. My own Mii had a crooked smile I had drawn with the remote's pointer.

I did not play a game. I just sat there watching the menu screen drift by. The music was the same cheerful loop I had heard a thousand times. But now it sounded different. It was quieter, almost hollow. The house was silent. No one was yelling over a strike. No one was fighting for the next turn.

That was the real game, I realized. It was never about the bowling or the tennis. It was about the noise. The chaos. The people packed on the couch, sweating over a plastic remote. The Wii was just the excuse we used to be together. Now the console sits in a box, and the people are scattered across different cities, different lives. The clicks and the laughter are gone. All that is left is the echo of a song that no longer has anyone to dance to.
