A significant shift is coming to video game age ratings across Europe. Starting in June, the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system will introduce a new, stricter approach to classifying games that feature certain monetization mechanics and online interactions.
The most prominent change will see any game containing paid random-item loot boxes automatically receive a PEGI 16 rating. This move directly addresses widespread concerns from regulators, parents, and consumer groups about the potential harms of these gambling-like elements, particularly for younger players.
Furthermore, PEGI is broadening its criteria to better assess "online interactive risks." This means factors like in-game chat functions, the presence of user-generated content, and the pressure to spend linked to battle passes and other live-service features will now be formally evaluated during the rating process. A new "In-Game Purchases" label will also be applied more consistently to warn consumers.
These sweeping updates represent the first major overhaul of the PEGI criteria in nearly a decade. The goal is to ensure the age ratings remain relevant and effective in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, providing clearer guidance to families about the potential financial and social impacts of modern video games beyond traditional content like violence or bad language. The changes will apply to all new games submitted for rating from June 2024.
