Subnautica 2 uses Unreal Engine 5 to make the ocean feel psychologically hostile

Subnautica 2 uses Unreal Engine 5 to make the ocean feel psychologically hostile

The ocean is getting meaner. Unknown Worlds Entertainment has confirmed that Subnautica 2 will run on Unreal Engine 5, and the shift is less about graphical fidelity and more about psychological warfare. Everything looks beautiful and that's exactly why it's scary. The team is leaning into the engine's ability to render dynamic lighting, volumetric fog, and real-time water physics to create an environment that feels alive in the worst possible way.

Early previews suggest the sequel is not just a prettier version of the original. The developers are using Unreal Engine 5's Lumen and Nanite systems to build bioluminescent trenches and sunlit shallows that shift from serene to suffocating within seconds. A glowing reef can turn into a claustrophobic tunnel of shadows when a leviathan passes overhead, blocking the light. The sound design is also getting a boost, with the engine allowing for more precise audio occlusion. You will hear the creak of your submarine before you see the pressure crack in the hull.

The goal is to make the player feel small. The original Subnautica already did this well, but the sequel aims to weaponize beauty. A gorgeous vista of coral and kelp can hide a predator that blends perfectly into the scenery. The team has stated that they want players to hesitate before swimming into a new biome, not because it looks ugly, but because it looks too perfect. That hesitation is the point. Subnautica 2 is scheduled for early access in 2025, and if the engine demo is any indication, the ocean has never looked this hostile.
