$7 billion in 2030: Opportunities in Southeast Asia’s Video Game Markets

Southeast Asia's video game industry is set for a major expansion over the next several years, with new projections pointing to a market value of $7 billion by 2030. The growth is being fueled by a steady rise in the number of players, better internet access across the region, and shifting habits among consumers who are spending more time and money on interactive entertainment.

For over a decade, industry analysts have tracked six key markets in the area, often referred to as the SEA-6. These include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Together, these countries represent the core of the region's gaming economy, and each one contributes to the overall upward trend in its own way.

Several factors are driving this momentum. Mobile gaming continues to dominate, especially in countries where smartphones are the primary device for online activity. The growing availability of affordable devices and data plans has opened the door for millions of new players. At the same time, local developers are producing more content that appeals to regional tastes, which helps keep spending within the local ecosystem.

Another key element is the rise of digital payments. As more people gain access to e-wallets and online banking, making in-game purchases has become much easier. This shift has removed a major barrier that once limited spending in younger and less banked demographics.

The forecast also reflects a broader trend of gaming becoming a mainstream form of entertainment rather than a niche hobby. With live-service games, esports events, and social gaming features gaining popularity, players are staying engaged for longer periods. That sustained engagement translates directly into higher revenue for publishers and platform holders.

While challenges remain, such as regulatory differences between countries and intense competition from global titles, the overall outlook is positive. The projected $7 billion figure signals that Southeast Asia is no longer just a testing ground for game companies, but a serious market in its own right. Companies that understand the local landscape and invest early stand to benefit the most as the region continues to mature.
