8 Highly Anticipated Video Games That Were Not Worth the Wait

The gaming industry has a long history of hyping up titles that end up falling flat. Players wait years for a release, only to find a broken, unfinished, or just plain boring product. Here are eight highly anticipated video games that were not worth the wait.

Cyberpunk 2077 tops the list. After years of delays and massive marketing, it launched in 2020 with game-breaking bugs on last-gen consoles. The open world felt empty, and many promised features were missing. It took years of patches to make it playable, but the initial launch was a disaster.

Anthem from BioWare promised a new kind of shared-world shooter with flying suits. Instead, players got repetitive missions, a confusing loot system, and endless loading screens. The game was so poorly received that BioWare eventually abandoned its planned overhaul.

No Man's Sky had a similar story but a different ending. At launch in 2016, it lacked multiplayer, giant creatures, and basic features shown in trailers. It became a symbol of overpromising. However, unlike others, the developers kept updating it for free, turning it into a great game years later.

Duke Nukem Forever spent 15 years in development. When it finally came out in 2011, it felt like a crude, outdated joke. The graphics were last-gen, the humor was stale, and the gameplay was clunky. The long wait only made the disappointment worse.

Mighty No. 9 was a Kickstarter success meant to revive classic Mega Man gameplay. The final product had ugly art, poor controls, and a cringey voiceover. Fans felt betrayed after donating millions to a project that failed on every level.

Watch Dogs was shown at E3 2013 with stunning graphics. The final version had downgraded visuals and a boring protagonist. While not a broken game, the bait-and-switch left a bad taste.

Fallout 76 launched without human NPCs, relying on lifeless robots and holotapes. The world felt empty, and bugs were everywhere. A premium subscription that offered scrap boxes and private servers only added to the controversy.

Battlefield 2042 tried to be a massive multiplayer shooter but launched with missing features, no single-player campaign, and terrible map design. The player count dropped fast, and the game never recovered its reputation.

These games prove that hype and delays do not guarantee quality. Sometimes, the longer you wait, the bigger the letdown.
