Hasbro has quietly poured over $1 billion into video game development since 2018, yet the company has not released a single live service title during that period. The toy and entertainment giant, best known for brands like Monopoly, Dungeons & Dragons, and Transformers, has instead focused on traditional single-player and multiplayer experiences.
The revelation came during a recent investor presentation where executives detailed the company's gaming strategy. Despite the massive investment, Hasbro has avoided the trend of building persistent online worlds that rely on ongoing microtransactions and seasonal content drops. Instead, the company has backed projects like Baldur's Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, which became a critical and commercial success without any live service elements.
Industry analysts note that this approach is unusual for a company of Hasbro's size. Most major publishers have shifted toward live service games because they generate steady revenue over years rather than a single sales window. Hasbro's strategy appears to be a bet on quality and brand trust rather than recurring monetization.
The company has also worked on titles tied to its Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons franchises, but none have adopted the battle pass or daily login reward systems common in the industry. Hasbro's leadership has stated that they want players to feel they are buying a complete game, not a subscription.
Whether this billion-dollar bet pays off remains to be seen, but for now, Hasbro is one of the few large players in gaming that has actively avoided the live service model.
