No World Cup games? No problem. DMV businesses may still see a boost

No World Cup games? No problem. DMV businesses may still see a boost

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will not include any matches in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia region. The closest host city is Philadelphia. Still, businesses across the DMV are expected to see a noticeable increase in activity. That is the view of Matt Bakowicz, a sports management expert at American University.

Bakowicz pointed to several factors that could drive this effect. First, many international fans will use the D.C. area as a base for travel. The region has strong flight connections and hotel capacity. Fans may stay in the DMV for several days, even if they commute to Philadelphia for specific matches. Second, the area has a large population of people from soccer-loving nations. Local bars, restaurants, and cultural centers could see a surge in visitors gathering to watch games on television.

Third, Bakowicz noted that the World Cup draws corporate events and media attention. Companies may host viewing parties or sponsor events in the D.C. area. Hotels and conference centers could book business related to tournament logistics. Even without a stadium in the region, the economic ripple effect could be real.

Local tourism officials have already started planning for the influx. They expect the boost to extend beyond game days. Restaurants, ride-share services, and retail shops may all benefit. The key, Bakowicz said, is for businesses to market themselves early to international visitors. If they do, the DMV could feel like a host city in its own right.
