The freedom to own, collect, and preserve video games is quietly slipping away. As the industry pushes harder toward a digital-only future, the tangible disc and cartridge are becoming endangered artifacts. This shift is not just about convenience or shelf space. It is about control.
When you buy a digital game, you are not really buying a game. You are buying a license to access it. That license can be revoked. Servers can shut down. Stores can remove titles from your library without warning. We have already seen this happen with older consoles and delisted games. Physical media is the only hedge against that uncertainty. A disc in your hand does not need a server check. It does not require a company's continued goodwill to function.
Beyond ownership, there is the matter of preservation. Video game history is fragile. Many early titles are already lost because they existed only on cartridges that degraded or on servers that were wiped. Physical copies allow archivists, museums, and future generations to actually play these works as they were originally intended. A digital download is a snapshot that can vanish. A physical copy is a lasting document.
Collectability also matters. There is a tactile joy in a game case, the artwork, the manual, the map that unfolds. These physical objects carry a sense of permanence and personality that a digital icon on a menu screen cannot replicate. They are not just products. They are pieces of culture.
The industry is moving toward streaming and subscription models. That path leads to a future where you own nothing and pay forever. Physical games are the last line of defense. If we lose them, we lose the right to truly own what we buy.
