Snail Games, the studio behind titles like ARK: Survival Evolved, recently offered a deeper look at how it sees artificial intelligence reshaping the social side of online gaming. During a presentation earlier this week, the company walked through the work being done by its Egofold division on what it calls Non-Human Players, or NHPs. The idea is not just to add smarter bots to fill empty slots, but to create persistent AI characters that players can actually form relationships with over time.
According to the studio, these NHPs are designed to remember past interactions, adapt to a player's playstyle, and even show emotional growth. That means an AI companion might start as a nervous recruit in a survival game, then gradually become a confident ally who jokes around or warns you about danger based on what it has learned from your sessions. The long-term goal is to make these characters feel like real members of a guild or party, not just scripted quest givers.
The company argues that this shift could change how multiplayer games are played. Instead of always waiting for human friends to log on, players could rely on AI companions that have their own schedules, moods, and memories. Snail Games also hinted at future systems where NHPs could interact with each other, creating a living world that evolves even when no human players are around. While the technology is still in early stages, the studio believes it will eventually become a standard feature in large online worlds, offering a bridge between solo play and full multiplayer cooperation.
